Mike Graduated from Louisiana State University with a Masters in Geology
in 1985. He immediately went to work in the environmental field where he was in
charge of a number of hazardous waste cleanup projects. He was in the environmental
field for 11 years and learned a lot about safety and business. Mike and Rose's
long-term goals were to purchase a practice for Rose to practice medicine. He
loves the warm weather and the water so he picked the location (Southern Florida near the
water) and she picked the practice. Mike has since undergone training in Washington
D.C. and is now a certified radiation safety officer. He is in charge of all health
and safety issues relative to the radioiodine therapy.
Mike is originally a Hoosier being born in Evansville Indiana, however, he
spent most of his life in Louisiana. The one thing he misses is the Louisiana food
and every year he imports good ole Louisiana crawfish and has a crawfish boil for the
staff and friends.
His interests outside of work include fishing, snorkeling, boating and
saltwater aquariums. He also helps Rose with the dogs and cats.
Blue is Mike and Rose's most recent adoptee. He was run over by the
owners when he was just a few months old. They brought him in to us and his left
rear leg was broken in a couple of places and required surgery. The owners could not
afford the surgery or even the diagnostic work we had already done, so he was left in our
care. He was such a cute puppy and had such great personality (even with a broken
leg), we knew we would have no trouble finding him a good home once he was fixed up.
After a couple of surgeries, we found him a very good home - Theirs
The dreaded Eger Gang - Bonnie (left), Blue (middle), and Clyde the Glide
(right)
Clyde was our first dog. After Rose graduated from Veterinary
school, we moved into our first house and it was large enough to accommodate a dog.
We looked through the paper and there was someone giving away free Lemon Walker
puppies. A Lemon Walker is essentially a white color phase of a Walker Coon Hound.
Although a Walker Coon Hound is not a true breed, in hunting territories, like
Louisiana, Walkers are very popular dogs. It was raining when we went to look for a
puppy, and they were kept in a pen outside where it was very muddy. The female had
eleven puppies and most of the puppies were white but two had some black and brown spots.
We got one of the ones with the spots. Clyde has always hated the water and
mud and we have often wondered if it was because of the muddy beginning he had - more than
likely he is just a wimp who does not like to get wet.
The next dog we got was a female and of course, since we had a Clyde, we
had to name her Bonnie. Rose likes to exercise by walking or jogging and one day
she was walking around a large hospital in Louisiana. A black lab dog around eight
months old (with no collar) came up to her and began to follow her. The dog had no
tail and had a bad case of mange. She came along side of Rose and would not
leave. When the path Rose was walking on turned towards the interstate, the dog
stopped and began to whimper. Rose could not just leave the dog there so she
decided to take it to a nearby Veterinarian's office. She was driving our jeep at
the time and it had no top on it. The dog, sensing that it had a good thing going
did not try to jump out of the jeep on the way to the vets office. Rose was hoping
that the vet was treating the dog for the mange or that the vet recognized the dog from
one of his clients but no such luck. When no one answered our add in the lost and
found section of the newspaper, we officially adopted her.
